Smålanda, one of the moons of the gaseous planet Hyby, is home to several sentient native species and an immigrant human population of Nordic and Baltic Earth origins. The original human colony was sponsored by IKEA; most towns and public works were named after popular products from the home decor brand. The native species find pronouncing these names hilarious, though occasionally impossible.

Jonas was born in the small city of Elmtaryd to an educated couple via IVF. They were unable to conceive again, leaving Jonas as an only child. His family’s affluence and his mother’s habit of spoiling him didn’t do him many favors; as a child and teen, he was exceptionally materialistic and lazy, complaining often and demanding the latest model of any personal tech. His father’s father finally put an end to the his mother’s coddling, encouraging Jonas’s father to send him to a private boarding school on a bigger world. He didn’t excel at Besos Royal Academy, his marks barely decent enough to qualify him for continued education, and he attempted to return home. Disappointed, his parents refused to allow it and demanded he enroll in a program.

He chose the UICAF Officer Candidates Academy as a joke, believing that his parents would never allow him to join the armed forces. This was a miscalculation, as Jonas’s parents fully supported the choice and hoped that the rigors of military education would correct their own mistakes in his upbringing. Jonas felt trapped there, and he did little to distinguish himself aside from earning a poor reputation as a party boy, shirker, and a poor sport.

Graduating from the Academy by the skin of his teeth, Jonas was commissioned as an officer in the UICAF; of the force’s many prestigious branches, the Surface Occupation Division has the poorest reputation for both the calibre of its personnel and the difficulty of the work it does. Here, Jonas entered his service as a second lieutenant and was handed the command of a small unit of boots-on-the-ground soldiers. The first test of his mettle came faster than he was prepared for, a deployment order issued within weeks.

The deployment was expected to be routine work supporting an existing, peaceful UICAF occupation of a recently-contacted planet. There was no intelligence that warned of an organized and violent extremist natives movement; Jonas’s unit was quickly cut off from the forward detachment. They were lost to comms during the ensuing conflict, and it was expected they had all been slaughtered. Weeks after the resistance had been pushed underground and order reestablished, Jonas and his unit were recovered with no casualties.

They had been held as POW after Jonas had sustained a life-threatening injury with damage to his chest and internal organs; when asked to give their statements on how they managed to break free, the soldiers explained that it had been Jonas, from his back on a medbay, who came up with the plan to overwhelm their captors and make their escape. They described his fervor, his abject refusal to die, and the carnage they inflicted on the extremist’s camp.

Jonas was awarded the Obsidian Star for his leadership and tactical savvy; from that point on, he seemed profoundly changed by the experience of combat and his position as responsible for the lives of others. He quickly became a model of correct protocol and a self-starter, requesting opportunities to prove himself on the field again and again. His commendations began to accumulate quickly, and he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant shortly after. His commanding officers, who once placed bets on how quickly he would receive a dishonorable discharge, have begun to look to him as a vision of the future of the UICAF.

Recovering from his injuries also impacted Jonas; he became keenly interested in maintaining his body at its physical peak. Most of his free time is spent pursuing wellness activities like exercise and meditation, and he is exacting about the nutrition and purity of what he consumes.

He is a current recruitment spokesman for the SOD, and has been sent to Messier to promote enlistment packages which include judicial pardons of existing criminal records, and financial incentives that would be attractive to those struggling to make it in the satellite city.
